High-impact innovation themes powered by CNTs
The Carbon Age program advances the transition to nano carbon across three themes.
Each theme represents an area where CNTs have the potential to unlock new business applications, enabling significant performance advantages and novel capabilities that conventional materials cannot achieve.
By aligning research, prototyping, and commercialization efforts across these themes, the ecosystem accelerates the technology transformation with CNT.
Microsystems
Advancing Moore’s Law scaling and More-than-Moore diversification with CMOS-ready CNT technology.
Microsystems technologies are advancing toward smaller dimensions, higher functional density, and ever-increasing performance demands. Moore’s Law has driven this miniaturization for decades, but conventional materials are now approaching their physical and efficiency limits. This theme focuses on controlled integration of CNTs into semiconductor processes, including CMOS-compatible fabrication, MEMS integration, and device-level interconnects.

Carbon nanotubes offer a pathway to overcome the constraints of legacy materials, enabling step changes in future electronics. Their exceptional electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties enable innovations that extend scaling trends while introducing entirely new functionalities—more Moore and beyond the Moore.
Electrochemical sensing
Enabling next-generation analytical platforms using CNT for high-precision electrochemical detection.
Electrochemical sensing plays a critical role in understanding human health, process environments, and natural ecosystems. This theme drives the development of scalable CNT-based electrode materials, sensor architectures, and integration methods that meet regulatory, manufacturing, and performance requirements.
The exceptional sensitivity of CNTs unlocks unprecedented electrochemical detection capabilities for new assays. The result is a new generation of more accessible and high-precision sensing platforms.

Emerging frontiers
Advancing frontier technologies with CNT-based architectures for quantum, photonic, and space applications.
This technology theme supports exploratory, high-impact research where CNT can serve as a platform for the next major technological breakthroughs. Organizations working in cutting-edge domains benefit from early-stage collaboration, shared expertise, and coordinated development efforts.
The exceptional properties of carbon nanotubes position them as a candidate material for structural reinforcement for active components and advanced sensor systems capable of operating in extreme environments.
